A QAJAR LACQUERED PAPIER-MÂCHÉ PEN CASE (QALAMDAN) WITH A SOOT SPOON
Iran, 19th century
With rounded ends and sliding tray, lacquered, polychrome-painted and heightened in gold, the top and sides with criss-crossing and diagonally striped gold bands in the typical style of Abu Taleb, inscribed near opening in gold ink Abu Taleb Mudarris 1272AH (1855), the underside with gold and red arabesque-like cartouches filled with the 'engine-turning' design over a green ground, the inner tray with similar pattern in reverse over a red ground, containing a small calligrapher’s soot scoop in white metal, 21cm x 3.2cm x 3cm.
