A QAJAR LACQUERED PAPIER-MÂCHÉ PEN CASE (QALAMDAN) WITH FIGURAL DECORATION Iran, 19th century With rounded ends and sliding tray, polychrome-painted and heightened in gold, the top decorated with a horizontal-format figural composition divided into three gold-highlighted, cusped cartouches, two with Mother and Child scenes, the central one with two Qajar ladies kneeling in front of a prince and his attendant, clad with a sumptuous brocaded coat, portrayed reading a book, in-between the cartouches two oval portrait medallions of typical Qajar maidens with bouquets, the sides repeating the same oval portraits alternating with further cusped cartouches filled with scenes en plein air, including separate groups of ladies and men reclined on large bolsters, the underside and inner tray with stylised gilt lotus and flower scrolls against a bright red ground, 23.5cm long.Click here to share:
