A QAJAR POLYCHROME-PAINTED ENAMELLED COPPER QALYAN CUP WITH MOTHER AND CHILD PORTRAITS Iran, 19th century Of typical flaring cylindrical shape, with an everted rim, the exterior painted in polychrome enamels and gold, alternating cusped cartouches and oval medallions with gold beaded frames filled with figural portraits focusing on the theme of motherhood and the bond between mothers and their children, the mothers and wet nurses clad in Western-inspired clothes, often showing their breasts, further lobed half cartouches decorating the base with winged putti figures reclining on a rose buds' bed, all set against a cobalt blue ground with gilt rosettes and foliage, the interior plain and stripped off of its original enamelled ground, 8cm diam. and 5.5cm high.Click here to share:
