A QASHQA'I 'DRAGON AND PHOENIX' SINGLE BAG. SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1900
A QASHQA'I 'DRAGON AND PHOENIX' SINGLE BAG. SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1900
“This bag has a small diamond-lattice design with fills in a simplified dragon and phoenix pattern. The front is decorated in single bands of weft-float brocading. The upper band is a diamond and bar checkerboard pattern, the lower band a reciprocal tuning-fork pattern. There are some rows of weft-faced kelim plain weave especially at the top. No closure panels are present and there are metal rings instead. The front is in symmetrical knotting, warps in undyed wool, wefts in red with 2, 3 and 4 shoots. The rear is in weft-faced plain weave in an attractive striped pattern. Extra decoration is provided through bands of weft brocading, again in a reciprocal tuning fork pattern. The ends on the front and back are in plain weave, folded-over and hemmed. Above the hemmed areas are two rows of weft twining with plaited extensions that may have been loops. Sides are overcast in plaited Van Dyke stitching in blocks of varying colours.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 78). Approximately 32 x 36cm
