A QASHQA'I SINGLE BAG FACE, SOUTH PERSIA, LATE 19TH CENTURY

“Of hooked-medallion type with pistachio green ground. Later example of the standard hooked medallion type with hooked lozenges as corner decoration. Outside the usual central rosette, 4 modified floral devices occupy the corners of the medallion together with a similar number of S-shaped animal-head forms of the C2 variant described by Pinner (page 134, Pinner, R. in Woven Gardens, ed by Black, D. and Loveless, C. David Black Oriental Carpets, London, 1979). Small stemmed diamonds line the outer edge of the medallion and there are numerous other floral and square fillers throughout the red ground. The outer green field has similar fillers, randomly distributed, although there are S forms in more organized rows. The usual meander animal-head geometrical border is present in floral and non-floral forms. The guards are filled with small crosses, squares and flowers in no particular order. The slit panel is in yellow and red twill with no variation. A weft float brocaded diamond pattern, blue on white, forms the guards to the slit panel with multiple rows of red and green weft twining above the outer guard row. There is no start end remaining but the finish end is in kelim that is folded over and loosely hemmed. The sides consist of a single cable in several warps over-wrapped in red wool. The back of the bag is missing. The main structure is in asymmetrical knotting, open to the left, with undyed worsted warps and red wefts in two shoots.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 86). Approximately 65 x 81cm

LITERATURE:

Benjamin, Paul, South Persian Rugs, Bags and Saddle Covers: from the collection of Paul R Benjamin, 3rd ed., 2004, pp. 86-87

“The contrast between the red medallion and green ground gives this bag an attractive appearance although its main design is quite conventional.“ (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 86)
