A QASHQA'I SMALL WARP-FACED SINGLE BAG (PURSE?). SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1900
A QASHQA'I SMALL WARP-FACED SINGLE BAG (PURSE?). SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1900
“The bag is woven in a warp-faced complementary warp pattern. The front side has a simple repeating hexagonal design in blue and ivory on a dark blue ground. The central field is framed on the left and right side by four vertical bands in a two-colour alternating pattern. Simpler white-on-blue patterns form horizontal borders at the top and bottom. There are a few examples of cross-shaped fillers on the front and these fillers form the main pattern on the reverse side of the bag where they occur in horizontal rows. The side borders on the front side continue on the reverse. Remaining sides are overcast in plaited orange and blue wool. There are double rows of countered weft twining that extend into plaited loops on the right. The ends are in kelim folded over and hemmed.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 84). Approximately 13 x 17cm

“Simple but pleasant design perhaps for a child. Most of the warp faced designs described by Tanavoli (Tanavoli, P., Shisha Derma. Iranian black and white textiles. Hali issue 63, pages 84-8, 1992) are in a much larger format.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 84)
