A QASHQA'I WARP-FACED DOUBLE BAG, SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1900
A QASHQA'I WARP-FACED DOUBLE BAG, SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1900
“Both fronts have an identical blue-on-ivory lattice design with facing arrow-heads forming a repeating X motif. There are additional left and right-side borders formed of vertical rows of two-coloured bands in an alternating pattern. These continue onto the reverse sides of the bag. The main field of the backs of the double bag consists of rows of white triangles on a blue ground. The woven structure of the bag is warp-faced complementary warp weave in two colours, blue-dyed wool and white cotton. The weft is in brown wool. The closure panels are in the same warp-faced weaving as the main field. There are guards consisting of a single row of weft twining. Four rows of countered soumak lie above the slit panels and these are plaited to form lateral extensions. More rows of complex weft twining occur on the backs of the bag and these extend into plaited loops opposite the slits in the closure panel. The ends are folded over and hemmed. The sides are overcast in V-shaped plaiting in blocks of different colours.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 82). Approximately 37 x 25cm

“This is an attractive example of a well-known type where the basic blue (‘black’) and ivory design is embellished by more brightly coloured vertical bars that frame the main field (see Tanavoli, P. Hali issue 63, 1992).” (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 82)
