A Queen Anne Silver Teapot by William Gamble, London, 1712

[ translate ]

pear-shaped and on collet foot, the hinged domed cover with baluster finial, engraved with a coat-of-arms within foliage cartouche, with later wood handle 15cm high, gross weight 15oz 2dwt, 469gr William Gamble was the son of Thomas Gamble, a carpenter. He apprenticed to John Sutton in June of 1680 and was to gain his freedom in March 1688, though his first recorded mark doesn't appear until 1697 when he is recorded as working on Foster Lane. He worked his way up in the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths', joining the Livery in 1705, the court in 1724 and finally becoming Warden in 1730. He would seem to have had a successful career giving the surving body of work that exists, including a broad range of domestic wears of which the present teapot is a good example.

Fully marked underneath. The cover apparently unmarked. There is some wear to the marks. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is particularly noticeable as a softening to the engraved coat-of-arms. The wood handle is later. There is a small area of solder inside the cover. This may be a repair or constructional. We are happy to provide Condition Reports to prospective buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale. We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. A Condition Report is an honest expression of our opinion, not a statement of fact and is provided as a service to the seller. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated. Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession. We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.
