A 'RAMLEH' PALESTINIAN EMBROIDERED THOBE DRESS
Ramleh or Beit Dajan, Palestine, 1960s-1970s
Woman’s dress (thob) with narrow sleeves, made from black llinen, the chest ornament is richly embroidered (tatreez) in dense red cross-stitch with orange, pink, pale blue and lilac accents, the pattern comprising small rose-like or spiral rosettes set inside diamond and lattice shapes with a row of light blue stitiching outlining the panel edge; tall vertical bands of bold red vine embroidery run down the skirt, each with repeating grape-leaf motif inside a diamond framework.
