A RARE ANTIQUE GEMSET SUFFRAGETTE PENDANT NECKLACE in 15ct yellow gold, the openwork pendant set with pearls, an elongated oval cut topaz and square step cut pink sapphires, suspending three old cut diamonds with oval cut peridot and pear cut pink tourmaline drops, suspended from a fancy link chain, stamped 15CT, pendant 6.0cm, chain 56.0cm, 9.4g. Accompanied by original box inscribed 'BESSIE FROM ALFRED SEPT 15. 1910.' This pendant was reportedly a gift to Bessie Watson, a well-known member of the Suffragette movement. At 9 years old in 1909, Bessie was not only one of the youngest suffragettes but also one of the youngest bagpipers in the world. She combined her two passions and would march in suffragette pageants first in Edinburgh, Scotland and later London. She would continue to play her bagpipes and support women's rights for the rest of her life. The colours used in suffragette jewellery were green, white, and violet representing the phrase 'Give Women Votes.'
