A RARE CHINESE BAMBOO 'BAGUA' TOOL VASE
A RARE CHINESE BAMBOO 'BAGUA' TOOL VASE
18TH CENTURY
Well turned and hollowed, rising from an intricately stepped foot to rounded shoulders and an everted rim, carved in relief with the Eight Trigrams, Bagua, equally spaced below the shoulders, 11cm.
Provenance: from the collection of Dr John William Hawksley Grice OBE (1891–1976) and thence by descent.
The Bagua also known as the 'Eight Trigrams' are a series of eight symbols each made up of three lines each either broken (representing yin) or solid (representing yang) together representing fundamental philosophical principles of reality. Its decoration on a vase represents harmony and cosmic order as well as the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom. See Bonhams, 6th November 2025, lot 308 for a comparable vase from the collection of Mr and Mrs Gerard Hawthorn.
