A RARE INDIAN DHAL SHIELD

Rajput work, formed of translucent hide in circular, slightly domed form and brown-lacquered overall. With four bronze pierced bosses, lacquered with 14 lobate cartouches in black with saffron borders, each containing a series of animals, a tiger, a stag, a fox and a rabbit, one following the next, all well-delineated and quite detailed. In the center appears a multi-rayed medallion representing Surya, the Sun. The vinework border executed in green, red and mustard. The reverse with grip rings intact. 18th-19th century. Rubbing and craquelure, minor deformation. Diameter 45.4cm / 17 7/8". Condition III
