Rare relief carved Cameo Conch Shell the oval shaped reserve depicting two ladies heads in profile, an eagle with outstretched wings to the fore, the panel 10cm high, overall 16cm high (6in high). Early 19th Century. The species most used in good-quality cameos has been the bullmouth helmet, the upper shell layer is whitish, and the lower shell layer is a rich orange-brown. After 1850, demand for such cameos carvings grew. They were often purchased as souvenirs of travels abroad, or imported as exotic collectable items
