A ROMAN POTTERY OIL LAMP WITH BOAR

Circa 200-300 AD. A pottery oil lamp with convex body, angled shoulders with a concentric ring design, a small narrow fill hole, and an intricate projecting wick spot. The recessed tondo displays a finely detailed boar in a running motion. The scene may refer to the hunt of the mythical Calydonian boar, which it was said to have been send by the goddess Artemis as a punishment for the king of the Greek city Calydon. This lamp testifies how scenes driven from literature and mythology were radically absorbed in Roman society and everyday life.
