A RUSSIAN ICON OF ST. SERAPHIM OF SAROV C. 1905. Comprising an interesting image of the popular 19th century Russian spiritual inspiration whose life would influence the Imperial Family, particularly the Empress Alexandra Feodorovna. Here Seraphim is shown in a wilderness interior wearing a simple tunic, a pectoral cross and holding prayer beads (chotki). On the ground before him his hat, a pair of gloves, an axe and a simple white "bread bag." Hanging in the tree before him his icon of the Mother of God which he called his "Joy of Joys." The condensed and abbreviated inscription above his head reads "The Holy Venerable Seraphim praying on a rock." A colorful and charming icon of one of the most popular Russian saints in the waning years of the Imperial Empire. 10.5 inches x 9 inches (26.5 x 23 cm).
