A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE CRUCIFIXION, 19TH C. Comprising a colorfully painted icon executed on a gilt ground (likely Nvyansk) depicting at center the crucified Christ, at top center God the Father, beneath him a dove representing the Holy Spirit, and on either side two Angels of the Lord descending with cloths. In the upper left corner is the sun that has darkened and the upper right corner the moon which has turned as blood (Joel 2:31). On the left side of The Cross are the two Mary's, and on the right sight the Apostle Saint John, and the Roman Centurion Longinus. At the lower center within a hole in the ground is a skull, traditionally the skull of Adam, and above it the Cyrillic letters GGGA standing for The Hill of Golgotha and the Head of Adam. The left border with the Holy Martyr Alexandra, and on the right border another female saint. 13.4 inches x 10.5 inches (34 x 27 cm).
