A RUSSIAN ICON THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, PALEKH, 19TH CENTURY. This type illustrates the second antiphon of the Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom which begins, "Only begotten Son and Word of God…". At top center is God the Father and immediately below in this example is the Old Testament Trinity above Immanuel within a circle supported by angels. He holds a scroll which begins with the words of Luke 4:18, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me...". At lower right Death (portrayed as a skeleton) rides out of a dark cave on a lion trampling bodies beneath him. At lower left is a cross with Christ robed as a warrior seated, symbolizing his victory over death and below him an angel overcomes Hades. The upper margin inscribed in Old Church Slavonic with the title ONLY BEGOTTEN SON AND WORD OF GOD. In a good state of original preservation. 13.5 inches x 11 inches (34 x 28 cm).
