A RUSSIAN PARCEL-GILT POLISHED-STEEL GLOBE-FORM INKSTAND, TULA, CIRCA 1780

In the form of a celestial or terrestrial globe, the polished-steel spherical body is supported within an open framework of curved meridian-like bands and raised on a turned stem above a square plinth. The equatorial band is set with four applied parcel-gilt flowerhead bosses joined by finely worked, swagged garlands of stylized roses and foliage. The domed upper section is surmounted by an urn-form parcel-gilt finial with a small button thumbpiece. The concealed release mechanism allows the domed cover to be raised on its hinged framework, revealing a circular fitted compartment pierced with two apertures originally intended to accommodate a removable inkpot and pounce or sand caster.

Dimensions: H: 8 1/2 in., (21.5 cm.)

Conditions: Very good. Some dark spots due patina and oxidation.
