A Rare English Silver-Gilt Hilted Small-Sword
The Hilt Late 17th Century, Indistinct Maker's Mark
With 18th century sharply tapering colichemarde blade (old wear and rust patination) of flattened hexagonal section retaining traces of etched decoration on both sides of the forte, hilt cast and chased in low relief with figures and foliage against finely punched grounds on the side-loop and knuckle-guard, the former framing a plate cast and chased with a reclining figure centred on pierced and chased scrolling foliage, the latter with dolphin terminal, its tail hooked into the globular pommel chased with a design of foliage between double roped borders on both sides, grip en suite, and retaining most of its original gilding
