A Rare Officer's Basket-Hilted Backsword
Late 18th Century
With tapering blade double-edged over a third of its length to the point (some old pitting) and fullered over its entire length over each side with a narrow fuller bordering it along the back, the forte with three short fullers on both sides, one side etched with crowned 'GRIII' cypher above foliage, and with crowned Hanoverian horse above foliage on the other, iron guard of rounded profusely punched and border engraved bars incorporating an integral cross patent between arrow-heads on both sides, one side with an oval aperture for reins, fore-guards, wrist-guard with button terminal, segmented bun-shaped pommel surmounted by a terminal and button en suite, spirally-grooved fishskin-covered wooden grip (fishskin incomplete) bound with copper wire between copper Turk's heads, and remains of a buff-leather liner (some old rust patination)
