[ translate ]

Circa 1815, the gilt-tooled leather inset top with a brass mounted edge, above two short mahogany lined frieze drawers, on square section end supports, terminating in ebonised scroll hipped lion paw feet and brass castors, 117cm wide x 71cm deep x 76cm high, (46in wide x 27 1/2in deep x 29 1/2in high)

The offered lot relates to a rosewood sofa table and rosewood games table supplied to John Gladstone Esq. (1764-1851) in 1813 by Gillows, both of which feature in S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Vol. I, pp.'s 265-7, pl.'s 270-2. These two comparable models have similar lion paw feet to the present example, albeit the former are cast in brass while the latter are carved from ebonised wood.

In fact the square section vertical end supports, twin baluster outline of the cross stretcher and knuckled lion paw feet of this library table follow those distinctive characteristics present in the design for the aforementioned games table which appears, dated 13 April 1813, in the Gillows Estimate Sketch Books, No. 1926. Related tables sold Bonhams, New Bond St., 13 March 2007, lot 111 and Sotheby's, Collections, 30 April 2013, lot 478.
