A Regency giltwood, gesso and ebonised wall mirror, circa 1815, the rectangular plate below an egg and dart moulded cornice and tablet incorporating a 'Fasces' symbol, flanked by fluted tapering columns each surmounted by Egyptian male terms and a star, 173cm high, 107cm wide
The 'Fasces' was the symbol of the authority of the Roman Republic. The group of sticks or rods bound together represents the idea of collective power, while the axe heads emerging at either side represent military strength.
