A Regency mahogany cheval mirror, attributed to Gillows, circa 1815, the rectangular swing plate supported by turned and reeded uprights and stretchers, surmounted by brass urn finials, flanked by brass candle arms cast with mythical creature masks and foliate pattern, on outswept legs terminating in brass caps and castors, 167cm high, 82cm wide, 60cm deep
Gillows supplied two related cheval mirrors in 1813 to William Powlett, 2nd Baron Bolton (1782-1850) for Hackwood Park, Hampshire (sold from Hackwood, 20-22 April 1998, lots 361-362). Between 1811 and 1812. Gillows also supplied three similar 'Handsome Cheval Dressing Glasses' to T.W. Egerton for Tatton Park, Cheshire at 12½ gns. each (N. Goodison and J. Hardy, 'Gillows at Tatton Park', Furniture History, 1970, pl. 17b and pp. 28, 30 and 32).
