[ translate ]

A Regency mahogany library bookcase, circa 1815, of breakfront outline, the moulded cornice above glazed bookcase doors, the base with arrangement of cupboard doors, 236cm high, 251cm wide, 56cm deepProvenance: Berwick House, ShropshireCondition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Old splits and chips. Section of moulding to one side of the cornice is an ebonised old replacement. Some opening of the joints at the edges of the panel to the doors of the lower sections. Some fading and variation in the colour of the timber between different sections of the bookcase. The sides are darker and have a more 'dry' surface than the front of the bookcase. This is likely from where the piece was placed in a room and the sunlight has caught different areas. The flame mahogany used in the bookcase is of impressive quality. One key present and operates lock to central lower doors. No key present for other locks. All are open except for the central upper doors where the lock is seized in the closed position. The central upper doors can still be opened and closed though. Some of the doors catch slightly on the hinges of the adjacent doors when opening. Two of the upper glazed doors with a panel of replacement glass each (old glass has been used). Some screws lacking to the hinges and various later screws are securing hinges. Escutcheon and lock plate to one side lower door is lacking. Some minor wood worm to underside and back. Very slight gap between the two pairs of central doors when closed (not flush). Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition. Overall length across the cornice - 249cm. The bookcase disassembles into nine pieces; cornice, three glazed sections, three lower section, the 'waist', and the plinth base. Condition Report Disclaimer
