A Roman bronze Bacchus bust, 1st - 2nd century
Finely worked bust of the youthful god with naked body. A wreath of flowers in the hair, and a hair band falls onto both shoulders. The once inlaid silver eyes are lost, otherwise intact. Excellent green and dark brown shiny patina. A small high quality bronze socketed on a blue base. The latter bumped at the base. Height 9.6 cm (with base 17.5 cm).
Provenance: South German private collection, acquired from the gallery AA Antiken, Munich, in the early 1980s. In 1971 for sale at the Galerie am Neumarkt, Zürich (Lot 177; examined by Prof. Hansjörg Bloesch, Zürich).
