A Roman ceramic discus lamp with SEXTI mark

A Roman ceramic discus lamp, late 1st - early 2nd Century AD, with deep set discus linked to nozzle via a channel, the shoulders with three lugs. On bottom concentric ridges surrounded central depression with maker's mark SEXTI in relief. 4 3/16 x 2 3/4 in. (10.6 x 7 cm). Carbon deposits from use in antiquity. Cf. Bussiere & Rivel, La Collection Rivel, p. 142-3, no. 153 from a near identical example from the lamp maker FORTIS. Ex property from the collection of Joseph Klein (1899-1987), New York City. Mr. Klein sought out and acquired these souvenirs as part of his vast collecting interests. Said to have collected in the manner of an 18th century connoisseur, his overall collection showcased his diverse array of artifacts acquired over a period of 45 years and included the art of ancient China, Egypt, Persia, Greece and Rome.
