A. Roquin Cunard / White Star vintage poster
Caption Brief: "To announce the launch of the Cunard White Star line's biweekly luxury liners service between New York and Cherbourg," Roquin positions the RMS Queen Mary and the RMS Queen Elizabeth carving the water in front of the Big Apple's premier symbol of Art Deco, the Chrysler Building. By this time, the Queen Mary was the fastest ship in the Atlantic, and the Queen Elizabeth was the biggest – a title the latter held for 56 years. "Roquin treated the poster as a collage, layering the two ships over the cityscape to create the illusion of a photomontage. The ships themselves...give a heavy nod to Cassandre" (The Art Deco Poster, Crouse, p. 239).
