A Russian Icon of the Kazanskaya Mother of God in a Cloisonné Enameled Gilt Silver Oklad Semyon Galkin, Moscow, 1908-1917 14 x 14 x 1-3x4 inches (35.6 x 35.6 x 4.4 cm) (overall) PROVENANCE: Sotheby Parke Bernet, June 8-9, 1978, lot 451; Ruth S. Nelkin acquired this work for $2600. This lot is typical of the meticulously modelled and carefully engraved works of Semyon Galkin, which rely on the reflection of light in low levels to create their illusions of depth and color due to the exceptional skill of combining low relief and engraved patterns to diffuse the light. This work was adapted before the revolution with the addition of exquisitely enameled halos and corners in the period, possibly added in gratitude to the Mother of God for an answered prayer.
