A Russian Silver and Silver Gilt Cloisonne and Shaded Enamel Mounted Leather Desk Folio

[ translate ]

A Russian Partial Gilt Silver, Cloisonné and Shaded Enamel-Mounted Leather Desk Folio Khlebnikov, Moscow, 1908-1917 19-1/2 x 15 inches (49.5 x 38.1 cm) (overall) 16-7/8 x 12-3/8 inches (42.9 x 31.4 cm) (mount) PROVENANCE: Ruth S. Nelkin acquired this work on June 7, 1978, for $6000. Khlebnikov was one of the preeminent firms of silversmiths and enamellers in turn-of the century Russia and was internationally known through their presence in the international exhibitions in which they won medals. The firm's work in Vienna (1873) and Moscow (1872) placed them in the international public eye and secured their position as an official supplier to the Russian Imperial Court, as well as to the Sovereigns of Denmark, Montenegro, the Netherlands, and Serbia. This folio is an exceptional example of the firm's original and inventive works that are expansions upon Russian folk designs, and which bear more resemblance to illustration art of the period than they do to the traditional Russian styles known from earlier historicists such as Feodor Solntsev.
