A SCARCE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD. Comprising a rarely encountered icon of the NEUPIVAEMAYA CHASHA-Unfailing Chalice. Depicting here the Mother of God in the orans position before a table upon which rests a chalice holding the infant Christ. The painted wood panel overlaid with embroidered velvet vestments and the custom shadow box frame decorated with gilt filigree elements and faux candlestands. The lower margin with inscribed title "Image of the Most Holy Mother of God of the Unfailing Chalice." This icon is said to have "appeared" in 1878 when the prototype cured a former soldier of alcoholism. This Mother of God type is currently popular in Russia as an aid for those who suffer alcoholism or drug addiction. Overall dimensions 13.5 inches x 11.25 inches (34 x 29 cm).
