(A) "SCHIMMEL" FLINTLOCK KENTUCKY PISTOL.

Probably Lehigh County, Pennsylvania circa 1820. This "schimmel" pistol was made for someone who would have wanted a pistol, but had little money to spend and wanted it to be as plain as possible. The unmarked barrel is octagonal and smoothbore. The lockplate has a rounded tail, a roller frizzen, and is stamped "C. BIRD / & Co. / PHILADA" in the center. The pistol was made with a trigger guard, ramrod ferrules, sideplate, or buttcap. The stock is of partially figured maple and shows generous traces of red "violin" finish. There are flats on each side of the cane-shaped grip. Complete with a trumpeted wooden ramrod. CONDITIION: Barrel and lock retain a grey patina. Lock is in its original flintlock configuration and functions well. Stock retains generous traces of original violin finish, shows a few scattered marks from use.
