A SEATED STONE LOKESHVARA INDIA PALA 12TH CENTURY
Dimensions: Height 29 cm Wide 22 cm Depth 10 cm
Weight: 12.3 Kilograms with base
The stone figure is carved in high relief, showing a seated bodhisattva within the surviving outline of an architectural setting. The upper body leans slightly to one side, with one arm bent across the torso and the legs arranged in an asymmetrical seated pose. A finely modelled face, elaborated hair and jewellery distinguish the figure from the roughly worked background. The edges of the stone are irregular and the surface is extensively weathered, with losses and abrasion to the projecting details. The compact composition retains a sense of movement despite the heavy stone support.
