A SET OF FOUR REGENCE GILTWOOD FAUTEUILS CIRCA 1720
Details
Each shaped and padded back, arms and seat upholstered in brown leather and tan suede with rope borders in a cartouche surrounded by foliate arabesques, the arms carved with scallop shells and acanthus leaves, above a seat-rail carved with a central scallop shell, on cabriole legs carved with scallop shells on scroll feet carved with acanthus leaves 43 in. (109 cm.) high; 271⁄2 in. (70 cm.) wide; 211⁄2 in. (541⁄2 cm.) deep
Lot Essay
These chairs with their leather and suede cut covers with applied acanthus leaf motifs echo a suit of four Louis XV fauteuils sold Hubert de Givenchy, Christie's Paris, 14 June 2022, lot 4. Givenchy himself had the covers made for these fauteuils and they, along with the present lot suggest a reference to the famous set of chairs delivered for the Trésorier de France Pierre Crozat during the Régence period and now in the Louvre in Paris (inv. OA 12179).
