A SHIRVAN KARAGASHLI RUG, EAST CAUCASUS
circa 1860
approximately 148 by 102cm; 4ft. 10in., 3ft. 4in.
Condition Report:
Very finely woven and very flexible handle. Pile closely sheared, varies from approximately 1mm in depth in the highest areas (upper third and lower sixth of field in dark blue and most of outer guards) to lower areas where knot heads are visible elsewhere with some oxidization in the dark reds of the karagashli palmettes and with some repiling in these, particularly the central one and a reweave visible on the online illustration on the central axis of the middle palmette approximately 8cm by 1.5cm. Repaired fold line approximately about half way up on the left hand side in the border, and another similar on the right hand side. Side cords reovercast, ends with warp fringing now secured. A lovely quality rug that has suffered a little bit but is still an attractive example.
