A SINO-TIBETAN GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF THE THIRD CHANGKYA HUTUKTU, ROLPAI DORJE Qing Dynasty, 18th Century 清十八世紀 銅鎏金三世章嘉呼圖克圖若必多吉坐像 Cast seated on a brocaded cushion embellished with a sash, with right hand raised in vitarka mudra, wearing long flowing robes decorated at the edges with foliate motifs and a distinct hat associated with the Geluk hierarchs, the face with a pair of almond-shaped eyes flanking a broad nose and above gently-smiling lips 21cm high, weight approx. 2.38kg - NOTE: A similar bronze, slightly smaller in size, was sold at Bonhams New York, 22nd March 2024, lot 812. Rolpai Dorje (1717 - 86) was the principal authority of Tibetan Buddhism at the Chinese court for half a century during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor. In 1734, Rolpai Dorje was appointed National Preceptor by Prince Hongli's father and predecessor, the Yongzheng Emperor (1723 - 35), who bestowed the rank of 'Teacher of the Empire' upon him.Click here to share:Request a condition report
