A SMALL NORTHERN BLACK- AND BROWN-GLAZED TEA BOWL

With gently rounded sides rising to a flaring lip, covered inside and out a rich russet brown glaze mottled with very dark brown verging on black, the glaze pulled thin at the lip rim, the short foot neatly pared showing buff stoneware body.
4 15/16in (11.9cm) diam
Footnotes:
宋 北方醬釉黑斑茶碗

Provenance:
John Sparks, London, October 1958
From the Collection of Baron Cunliffe (1899-1963), no. T48
Bonhams London, 11 November 2002, lot 35

Baron Cunliffe (1899-1963)舊藏,藏品編號 T48
倫敦邦瀚斯,2002 年 11 月 11 日, 拍品編號 35

The interior decoration of the present example is unusual, but closely related to the classic 'partridge-feather' pattern in northern black and brown ware. Compare the two bowls of very similar form, glazed brown on the exterior with black and brown 'partridge-feather' mottles on the interior, illustrated by Mowry, Hare's Fur, Tortoiseshell, and Partridge Feathers: Chinese Brown- and Black-Glazed Ceramics, 400-1400, Cambridge, 1996, pp. 142-144, no. 38a&b, noting similar examples were excavated from the Guantai kilns in Hebei province.
Condition Report: PLEASE NOTE: This report describes, but may not be limited to, major condition issues for the lot. Overall in good, original condition with no restoration. Tiny old nicks to rim but do not interfere with viewing. Glaze gaps and glaze bubbles are original to the firing.
