A SOAPSTONE 'EIGHT IMMORTALS' MOUNTAIN CARVING
19th century
Deeply carved and pierced to depict the Eight Immortals raised on a trail of clouds sweeping up the side of a jagged mountain top beneath a gnarled pine tree, the figure of Liu Hai with a toad sitting on his head seated on a bed of clouds below, the figures carved from beige inclusions within the stone, all raised on a pierced rockwork base.
