A SOUTH OR EAST PERSIAN CARPET FRAGMENT, CIRCA 1800 OR EARLIER
A SOUTH OR EAST PERSIAN CARPET FRAGMENT, CIRCA 1800 OR EARLIER
the saffron yellow ground with a row of green cypress trees enclosing foliate motifs and with feathery tops, edged in red and issuing red vinery supporting birds with striped wings, the field scattered with flowering and fruiting plants and small birds, approximately 34 x 166cm
The Collection of Professor Paul R Benjamin
For an introduction to the collection, please see Lot 193 in this sale
See also the following lot for a further fragment of this carpet. Of particularly glorious colour, this fragment with its repeating rows of trees and birds may be of Khorasan origin - the narrow red outlines seen here on the trees and birds are a typical feature of 17th century Khorasan carpets, although the robust structure is more reminiscent of carpets usually attributed to 17th century Kerman.
