A SOUTH WEST PERSIAN BAG FACE, CIRCA 1850

“This is a tribal bag face which we may convincingly assert to be prior to the formation of the Khamseh confederation. The stalks emanating from the central medallion are capped with bird’s-head symbols suggesting a shaman’s wand. Vertical rows of plant/ cone-like forms lie in the outer edges of the main field. Flower head forms consisting of rings of rosettes are an attractive decorative feature and there are numerous other small floral, diamond and crosses randomly distributed throughout the dark indigo ground. There is a single narrow border with an alternating of square and dot pattern. A panel at the top of the bag face is decorated with reciprocal animal heads. The sides and the ends of the bag face are missing. The knots are symmetrical in glossy wool. The warps are in brown and natural wool, spun together in parts. The wefts are dyed red in two and three shoots.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 96). Approximately 56 x 58cm

The Collection of Professor Paul R Benjamin
For an introduction to the collection, please see Lot 193 in this sale

LITERATURE:

Benjamin, Paul, South Persian Rugs, Bags and Saddle Covers: from the collection of Paul R Benjamin, 3rd ed., 2004, pp. 98-99

“This is an extremely interesting ‘early’ bag face that may be attributed to one of the tribal groups that later formed part of the Khamseh Federation.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 98)
