Description

Wood-cut decor and pastellage, made of older gilding with polished gold and percussion metal. Sarger with acanthus, beaded and fasces, winged grip, portoroimited footplate, board of carrara marble, height 82,5, 87 x 39,5 cm

During the late Gustavian era, the gripen became a personal emblem of Duke Charles, later Charles XIII, after he became Duke of Södermanland at the coronation of Gustav III, where the grapple is part of the county coat of arms. Through the designer Louis Masreliez and the court sculptor Pehr Ljung, the mythical guardian figure became part of the scenography in the environments around the duke. This becomes especially evident in the interiors of Rosersberg Castle, where Pehr Ljung and Ernst Philip Thoman visualized the fable beast in the upper drabant hall, Duke Karl's audience room and the duchess's bedchamber. Gripen was often included as a popular decor theme in all kinds of interiors and furniture during the late Gustavian era and the Empire.Show more
