A SUMMER RAIN OVER A RIVER LANDSCAPE -CHINA , WU SHI XIAN (1845-1916)
Dimensions: 95 cm x 42 cm
A narrow hanging scroll showing a river landscape of layered hills, small waterside buildings and trees fading into atmospheric distance. Darker brushstrokes describe the foreground slopes and vegetation, while pale ink washes allow the more distant terrain to dissolve into mist. The vertical composition gives the scene an expansive feeling despite its restrained palette.
Summer rain lends itself beautifully to Chinese ink painting, where changing moisture and light emerge through the interplay of washes and unpainted space. The painting's strongest quality is the quiet transition from sharply observed near forms to the softly receding river valley.
