A SWEDISH MINIATURE BUREAU BOOKCASEEARLY 18TH CENTURYVeneered in Alder root99.5cm high, 46cm wide, 34cm deep In the early 18th century, Swedish cabinet makers in the region around Mälardalen started veneering furniture in Alder root (as seen on this miniature bookcase). Influenced by English tastes of the period, the use of this timber was an attempt to mimic figured walnut popular in London at the time but scarce in Sweden. Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches, and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Various old chips and splits. Some sections of veneer re-stuck and some old veneer repairs (see images). Metalware appears original. No key present, all locks are open.Various flaking and losses to the cream painted interior of the cabinet, fall and drawers. This reveals the earlier blue coat of paint. Some larger splits to the back board of the cabinet. Evidence of old worm (see images for details). Section of replacement timber let into one of the rear feet. Some splits to bottoms of drawers.
