Robert Perry Burton was appointed to a commission in the Royal Marines in April 1941 and was awarded the M.B.E. for service with the Royal Marines. Raised Captain on 24 October 1946, and Major on 1 November 1947, he relinquished his commission on 26 September 1949 on appointment to a permanent commission in the Royal Artillery. The London Gazette of 29 November 1949 subsequently shows Burton transferring to the Royal Air Force Regiment as Squadron Leader (permanent).
