D.S.M. London Gazette 1 January 1940:
'For unfailing courage, endurance and resource in HM Trawlers, Drifters & Minesweepers in their hard and perilous task of sweeping the seas clear of enemy mines and combating submarines.
Charles White McDevitt was born on 3 July 1895 at Greenock, Scotland. He appears to have served in the Merchant Navy during the Great War and applied for a British War Medal and Mercantile Marine Medal on 8 June 1922, the Medal card is crossed out as having "Insufficient Service", whilst his medal entitlement for the Second World War appears blank.
Helvellyn was employed on Minesweeping Ops around Ardrossan, Greenock (Bute Sound) and the Isle of Man (Ships Log - ADM53/109142). Sailing on 5 November 1939 Gourock to Ardrossan, 12 November 1939 Ardrossan to Lamlash and on 24 November 1939 Rothesay Bay to Greenock.
