A Set of Four George II Silver Candlesticks by John Cafe, London, 1742
each on a shaped stepped square base, the baluster stem with fluted knop and terminating in a spool-shaped socket, each with a conforming detachable nozzle, the bases engraved with a coat-of-arms within foliage and rocaille cartouche, the nozzles engraved with a crest 20cm high, 75oz 16dwt, 2,357gr (4) Provenance: Property of Lady Walker, Isle of Man.
Each fully marked under base. The marks are generally clear. The nozzles apparently unmarked. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a softening to the high points and the engraving, particularly the engraved crests on the nozzle. The bases with some pitting. This is more noticeable on one than the others. The bases of two bruised which causes them to rock when placed on a level surface. Some minor bruises elsewhere. A Condition Report is an honest expression of our opinion, not a statement of fact and is provided as a service to the Seller. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage people to see an item in person when possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated. Works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
