A Set of Twelve Russian Neoclassical-Style Brass-Mounted Mahogany Dining Chairs Fundaçao Ricardo do Espirito Santo Silva, Lisbon, Portugal, 1981 35-1x2 x 22 x 20-1x2 inches (90.2 x 55.9 x 52.1 cm) (each) PROVENANCE: Princess Maria Romanoff. This set was commissioned by Princess Romanoff for use in her Fifth Avenue dining room. Using the Imperial Russian chair from the Mikhailovsky Castle in her collection as a model, twelve solid brass-mounted mahogany reproductions were commissioned by her from the Fundaçao Ricardo do Espirito Santo Silva. The foundation, from its home in Lisbon's Alfama, has since 1953, made high quality reproductions in its workshops, where young artisans are trained in restoration and pass on traditional techniques to students. The princess entertained relatives and friends frequently in her dining room, which had a northern view overlooking Central Park.
