Provenance:

Christies, New York, 20th January 1995, lot 261

Originally from the Collection of Mrs. Rafi Y. Mottahedeh, sold Sotheby's, New York, April 7th & 8th, 1988, lot 67, as part of a two volume collection containing 102 portraits, each album signed chen Lang Shining gong hui.

Literature:

David Howard and John Ayers, China for the West, London, 1978, chapters 1 and 2, pp. 13-42

These paintings were originally part of a group of 102 similar portraits depicting foreigners and minority people of China. They clearly illustrate the growing Western interest in China, and more generally with things non Chinese in the mid 18th Century. The laid down labels on each plate give a description of each portrait.
