A Sikh encampment scene, possibly depicting Maharaja Duleep Singh (1838-1893), circa 1853, signed indistinctly lower left in Urdu, opaque pigments on paper, mounted, glazed and framed, painting 29 x 33cm.

On 16 September 1843, at the age of five, Duleep Singh was proclaimed Maharaja of the Sikh Empire, with his mother Maharani Jind Kaur as Regent. On 13 December 1845 the British East India Company declared war on the Sikhs and, after winning the First Anglo-Sikh War, retained the Maharaja as nominal ruler.
