Aesthetic Movement Vari-Color Partial Gilt Silver Drinking Set in Original Chest, Birmingham, England, 1882 Marks: (lion passant), (leopard's head), (duty mark), h, FE, (various) 12-3x8 x 5-1x4 x 4-1x4 inches (31.3 x 13.3 x 10.8 cm) (tallest, decanter) 1558 grams (50.09 troy ounces) The service comprising: 1 ewer; 2 cups; 2 pierced serving spoons; 11 teaspoons. 16 total The ewer and two cups with flowering branches surrounding outlined multi-form cartouches with raised vari-color rim framing various birds and a squirrel, ewer with intertwined bamboo-form handle, each engraved with crest of griffin with wings elevated, supporting with dexter claw a tilting spear; partial flatware set continues flowered branch and bird motif to bowl and stem with fanned terminal. The original chest with silver plaque affixed to front engraved with crest above the inscription: XMAS 1882. Condition Report: The service presents beautifully overall, with finely engraved floral and foliate details. Both cups slightly out of round and with minor dings to rim. Light rubbing to gilding and fine surface wear throughout as expected with handling and polishing. Velvet-lined case with splitting, surface wear and losses to wood. Velvet with losses, threadbare areas and discoloration. Cups marked 11436 to underside and decanter numbered 15892. Heritage Auctions strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder.
