A South German hand pavese, bearing the coat of arms of the town of Schongau, late 15th centuryDistinctly domed wooden shield with a pronounced medial rib. Covered with parchment on both sides, the front painted in colour on gesso. A representation of the coat of arms of the town of Schongau am Lech. A right-facing eagle, bearing the lozenge shield of Bavaria on its breast, the white fields with remnants of the old silver foil plating. The reddish-brown background stippled with ochre yellow dots, two continuous border lines in ochre yellow. The paintwork scuffed here and there, the edge knocked in places with minor imperfections in the paint. Four iron loops with preserved shield grips of corded leather on the back. Dimensions 82 x 34 cm.Today, similar shields and pavises from the Schongau site can be found in numerous major collections, such as the Bavarian Army museum in Ingolstadt (inv. no. A 197), the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien (Imperial Armoury, A 2453), and the German Historical Museum in Berlin (inv. no. W757).Condition: II -
